How to Disable NetBIOS Protocol in your Windows 10 PC (Three Ways)

NetBIOS stands for “Network Basic Input/Output System.” It is a tool of Windows operating system, which enables the applications of a system to connect and communicate over a LAN (Local area network). For the network adapters, NetBIOS is enabled by default in Windows 10. But, if you don’t want to use the NetBIOS protocol on your PC, then you can disable it easily.

Disabling NetBIOS from Control Panel

In order to disable the NetBIOS from Control Panel, you’ll have to open navigate to the Network connections settings. Here is how.

Go to your desktop and press the ‘Windows logo + X’ shortcut. This will open a menu at the lower-left corner of the desktop.
Look for the ‘Run’ option on the menu and click on it. Doing so opens the Run dialog box.
Now, you’ve to input this path “control.exe /name Microsoft.NetworkAndSharingCenter” in the Open field of Run.
Click ‘OK’ to open the Network Sharing Center in the Control Panel.
Click on ‘Change adapter settings’ in the opened Control Panel window. It will open Network Connections settings in Control Panel, where you’ll see different network adapters.
Right-click on the network adapter’s name and then go to ‘Properties’ by clicking the last option. The properties window of that network adapter will open on your screen.
Now, scroll down under the center box of the Networking tab and find ‘Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)’ in the options.
When you’ll find ‘Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)’, check the box of it and then click the ‘Properties’ button given at the bottom of the center box.

Open’ Command Prompt’ in your preferred way. Or, go to your desktop and press the ‘Windows logo + X’ shortcut, then click on ‘Command Prompt’ in the menu opened at the lower-left corner of the desktop. You’ll get the Command Prompt window open on your screen.
Now, you’ve to input this command “wmic nicconfig get caption, index,TcpipNetbiosOptions” in the Command Prompt.
Then press your keyboard’s ‘Enter’ button. This will display you a list of the network adapters below your entered command line.
In the network adapters list, look for the network adapter you want to disable the NetBIOS feature. When you’ll find it, note down its ‘Index Number’. You’ll need to enter it into the next command.
Now, enter the “wmic nicconfig where index=[ADAPTER’S NUMBER] call SetTcpipNetbios 2”. In place of [ADAPTER’S NUMBER], you’ll have to enter the index number of the network adapter you want to disable the NetBIOS feature for.
After entering the correct command, press your keyboard’s ‘Enter’ button.
If you’ve entered the command correctly, this will disable the NetBIOS feature.
